Founded in 1916, Optica (formerly the Optical Society, OSA) is the preeminent organization dedicated to advancing the science of light. Bringing together scientists, engineers, and industry professionals, Optica fosters innovation in optics and photonics through high-impact research publications, international conferences, and professional development initiatives.

Each year, Optica elects a select group of Fellows in recognition of their significant achievements. Professor Fabrizio Carbone, head of EPFL’s Laboratory for Ultrafast Microscopy and Electron Scattering (LUMES), has been chosen among them “for pioneering discoveries in the field of electron-light interactions and their application to condensed matter physics and nuclear physics.”

Carbone’s research explores ultrafast electron microscopy and spectroscopy to capture and manipulate the interaction between light and matter at the femtosecond scale. His work has led to groundbreaking advances in ultrafast electron diffraction, quantum optics with free electrons, and the study of complex electronic phases in materials. His team at LUMES has developed innovative techniques to probe and control quantum phenomena, providing new insights into superconductivity, topological materials, and light-induced phase transitions.
